Deep Purple in Rock – Deep Purple

After hearing about Jon Lord passing away I decided to put this album on the 3000 playlist. I Don’t think I have listened to this for 10 years or so and I don’t know why as it is a great album. Blimey, talk about turning guitars up to 11. Anyone who doesn’t think Speed King is as exciting as rock music gets needs to exit the room now and leave your rock membership cards at the door. I really wanted to write about one track in particular today, Child in Time, really as a tribute to Jon Lord. What a track, after listening to this again I think we really need to bring the Hammond organ back into rock music, burn your synthesizers all you rock kids. Melodic, pompous, heavy, loud, there is really a bit of everything in Child in Time, including an amazing vocal. The ability to scream in tune was a necessary requirement of all 70s rock vocalists.
As a tribute to Jon Lord we all need to buy a copy of Child in Time and get it to number 1, the full 10 glorious minutes. I want to sneak in a mention here for the underrated Living Wreck, fantastic track with a hammering bass and drums combo from Messrs Paice and Glover.
Best track; Child in Time of course
Two word review; RIP Jon
