Surrealistic Pillow – Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small.
For all its psychedelic pretensions this is actually quite a commercial album, with a number of conventional pop/rock songs (My Best friend). The real stand out though is White Rabbit, it is a great song mixing Lewis Carroll and LSD. Listening to this tonight I remembered a dream I had a couple of months ago. It was a dream about the BNP leader Nick Griffin. He was dressed as the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland and he kept running past me singing, I’m late, I’m late for some very important hate. It was so odd I actually woke up laughing.
Some good tracks though, Today is a great track, a hippie Psy-ballard. Embryonic Journey is a great track and sounds fantastic on headphones, a mad sea of acoustic guitars. But I really want to return again to White Rabbit, definitely a stand-out track, just the right, or wrong, depending on your taste, side of subversive and sounding like Ravel’s Bolero. Was this really rock and roll? It was indeed, and its unsettling sounds (and associated substances) became the blueprint for the next 10 years.
