I do like me a good documentary, and over the last 10 years or so there have been some amazing ones (here is a quick list if you are interested; When We Were Kings, One Day in September, Capturing the Friedmans, The Bridge, Taxi to the Dark Side, Man on Wire, Touching the Void, The Imposter and of course Searching for Sugar Man. Here is a heads-up Channel Four, there is more to a documentary than a man with a 3 foot scrotum).
It is really strange I only watched the film once, but these tracks sound like instant classics. The whole thesis of the film is, how was Rodriquez not more successful back in the day? And, I have got to agree, where did it go so wrong for him. These songs are very good, I would go as far as to say some of them are classics.
Where do I start, of course Sugar Man has classic written right through it, a spanish influenced slice of Dylan, timeless. My favourite track at the moment is probably Sandrevan Lullaby – Lifestyles (a beautiful, Nick Drakesque, dark ballad), this track more than any makes me wonder why this guy wasn’t more popular, maybe he was just of the wrong time.
Hidden gem; Like Janis
