There’s a Riot Goin’ On – Sly and The Family Stone

I was in a bar a couple of nights ago discussing the relative musical contributions of Funkadelic and Parliament, then, at 8:50pm, I dropped a sizable social faux pas. I announced to the group that I was off home to watch Downton Abbey, yes, I know. There is a continual tug from other things that pulls me from my album listening,
I think this is one of the funkiest albums I own, apart from Tangerine Dream’s Zeit. I do love this album, but sometimes it sounds like it was recorded on a 8 track cartridge, with a pillow over the mic. Family Affair is all wonderful and minimal, and I think possibly one of the first records to feature a drum machine.
Micro review; This album slips along an astral plane of pure funk velvetness.

  1. Muddy, funky and paranoid. It’s an album that stands without a sibling. That’s why I always dig it out once in awhile, just because I need dense music on occasion. Like you said, it sounds poorly recorded but that’s the charm to me. Long love Sly!
