Philosophy of the World – The Shaggs

Often cited as one of the worst albums ever recorded. They certainly had a somewhat limited grasp of their respective instruments (the drums being particularly bad) but never has something so wrong sounded so right. I have been obsessed with this album for a couple of weeks now and thought I would play the whole thing tonight. My daughter thought it was hilariously bad and as usual my wife just shook her head and left the room. Once you get past the lack of musical ability there is something oddly beautiful about this album, it is music created by people who have never heard music before. If it was an art-rock experiment critics would be calling it a masterpiece, it is though, an unintentional masterpiece. Zappa loved them apparently, that’s enough for me.
