I never thought I would hear another Godspeed You! Black Emperor album. It has been 10 years since the last one but it was worth waiting for. Explosions in the Sky have been keeping the seat warm (and they are great), but this much more post-rockier (is that even a word?). Gone are the 21 minutes instrumentals of the previous album, and in their place are 20 minute instrumentals.
Actually the albums opener, the 20 minute instrumental Mladic, is as good as anything they have done, wonderfully intense and sounding like Hawkwind’s rebellious kids. I listened to it today while wandering around Sainsbuys and it was a very odd experience and made me a more discerning shopper. I am positive I would have bought more in the shop had I listened to the pipped Christmas Muzac. While listening to We Drift Like Worried Fire, a second box of Dinner Party Purple and Gold Christmas crackers just didn’t make sense any more.
Micro review; A hungrier, thinner, more annoyed, French-speaking Explosions in the Sky
