Ptooff! – The Deviants

It seems like there is a continual search by music historians to find the band that typifies proto-punk year zero. Is it MC5, The Stooges, Patti Smith, The Ramones, The Dictators, Dr. Feelgood or Johnathan Richman? Although I think it is a bit of a pointless exercise (perhaps the fact that there is no answer means music is a continuum, without a year zero) I would still like to throw The Deviants into the mix.
I thought I would give this a spin tonight as a way of celebrating the life and work of Mick Farren who died in July 2013 (If you only read one rock music memoir this year, try, Give the Anarchist a Cigarette, a very different version of the late 1960s).
Deviation Street sounds particularly fantastic tonight and years ahead of its time. And my favourite track, Garbage, The Cramps meet The Stooges in a dark alley and find a harmonica and spawn The Damned, is just the work of the unhinged, fantastic.
Hidden gem; Child of the Sky, for a band that couldn’t play, they could certainly play.
